“A magnificent personal inventory tool. Master your clutter the minimalist way!” – WIRED

Meet Kayla Moran, a talented Canadian photographer

Hi, Byebye friends!

From time to time we feature a remarkable person on the Byebye homepage, and also here, on our blog. This time we want you to meet Kayla Moran, from Canada, passionate about nature and photography. Kayla joined Byebye in August 2021. You can discover more of her work on her Instagram, and a couple of relevant links here.

Kayla was so kind to share a few thoughts with us, together with an amazing photo collection, presented on the app’s homepage, over the course of one week (you should see it before it’s gone!).

Q: How did your passion for photography start and how does it blend with your daily routine?

A: I’ve always wanted to express myself artistically, but growing up I never knew how. I would always cycle between wanting to be a novelist (maybe one day), an actor (can’t act), a singer (can’t sing), a painter (can’t even draw stick people), a dancer (definitely can’t dance), even a figure skater (can’t skate). Any time I was inspired by other people’s art, I wanted to do what they were doing even though I didn’t have the skills. It all looked so fun and meaningful, and I felt very unfulfilled.  At some point in my life I’ve attempted all of those things, but I never had the talent for anything, so it all remained a daydream, and I felt very down on myself. I’m a late bloomer on social media, but after I got an Instagram account I felt very drawn to photography and the creators I was seeing. I played around with my dad’s old camera before buying my own, and my style came very naturally to me. I finally found something artistic that I could actually do. I love to be outdoors, and shoot close-ups of nature, and capture the details most people overlook. I’d say that makes up about 3 quarters of my work.

Currently, I’m in school for visual communication so photography is definitely a part of my everyday routine, I take my camera and gear with me every day I go to class.  When I was just a hobby photographer I definitely struggled with that a lot more.  There were so many times I found myself wishing I had my camera with me to capture a moment.  I now keep my camera packed in my camera bag all the time so it’s easy to take with me on the go.  Of course, like every other twenty-something I’m basically married to my cell phone, and taking photos on my phone is definitely a huge part of my day-to-day life as well.

Q: How would you describe yourself in a few words?

A: Judging from my previous answer, sticking to a few words is pretty tough for me. I’d say sarcastic, nerdy, talkative, empathetic, and imaginative. I’m a daydreamer.

Q: You found Byebye as a useful digital tool, and we are thankful for that. How does the app help you?

A: I’m a recovering shopaholic turned environmentalist and minimalist, and I’ve got way too much crap. Byebye helps me to see where I need to cut down and where my bad habits are. It’s a lot easier to cut down on my impact on the planet when I know just how much clothing I have, for example. Now if I find something I want, instead of buying it right away I’ll put it on my wish list, and if I still want it after a month or two I’ll try to find it second-hand.  If I can’t, I’ll usually leave it on my wish list even longer to really decide if it’s something I’ll actually find value in, and then either buy it new or delete it.  I’ve reduced my impulse purchases to almost zero.

Thank you, Kayla, keep up the good work!
